Bringing together 12 artists we have shown some time ago or are about to in the near future, Studio 1.1 presents a show poised on the tipping point, when Summer starts to have shades within it of Autumn and decline. Two things held in the mind together, memory and actuality: the still firmly held belief that ‘summery’ means floral dresses, ice cream and holiday, when rising seas and Easyjet take us away from home. From A to B. With little prospect of back again.
Each artist has been asked where possible to present two new works they would like to see shown together: perhaps a summation of where they were, where they will be or indeed where in the tense and tropically overcast present they are.
The show will hang lightly; pared back, introspective and reflective, the works are deliberately modest in scale, the relationships between them delicate. Yet within all of the works on display there is an absence, a space which opens out to include the viewer, as well as to accommodate glimpses and echoes of the work of the other artists.
Each work has within it that sensitivity to time that reminds us finally that 'Summer's lease hath all too short a date'.
