29 March – 2 April
Sunok Kang’s work asks the viewer to take time out to look at the small details that otherwise go unnoticed. She draws our attention to the beautiful wherever it is found: from the delicately embroidered brand labels found on the inside of clothing, to the throw away items stocked in local stores. She juxtaposes the beauty of the attention to detail in labels made before the era of fast fashion, with the exuberance of the mass produced colourful plastic bins of today’s consumer culture. Drawing no conclusions, and making no value judgement, Sunok captures these items in her work and holds them up for us to admire. She draws out the humour of the statements the labels make, while exposing the nationalism that produced them, and balances this against the ubiquitous products of our current hyper globalised world.
