In conjunction with Standpoint gallery, Hoxton, Studio 1.1 presents another pre-Xmas extravaganza in which we all go to hell in a handbasket and return clicking our heels and bringing our tails and Toto behind us.
The show is divided both between the two venues and the classical themes of 'Portrait' and 'Landscape'; Standpoint will be peopled with souls in transport or torment and here at Studio 1.1 we will present their various hells and/or Edens. The onus as ever is upon the viewer to judge.
Alluding to the Malibu melodramas such as 'The Bold and the Beautiful' we parody damnation in order to keep it at bay. We praise paradise and yet inevitably fall short, corrupting and sullying it, proving ourselves unworthy of our wildest imaginings.
'E quinci sian le nostre viste sazie'
‘And let our sight be satisfied with that...', Dante, Inferno canto XVIII
Does art still have a role to play in promoting morally sound belief systems?
